Star India Wins IPL Rights for a Massive $2.55 billion

Star Sports, under the umbrella of Star India won global broadcasting rights to Indian Premier League, one of the highest grossing sporting leagues in the world. The bid started with 24 companies including Supersport, Sony Pictures, Facebook, Airtel, Sky, BamTech and Reliance Jio participating in the process for television and digital rights. The rights were finally awarded to Star India for the next 5 year rights from 2018-2022 for a massive $2.55 billion.
IPL media rights are divided into seven different categories — Indian television rights, Indian digital rights, the US, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and rest of the world. Previously, Sony held the broadcasting rights and Star India held the digital rights for IPL. Apart from IPL, Star India currently also holds the rights for major sporting events like Pro Kabaddi (PKL), Hockey India League (HIL), FIH Hockey events, Indian Super League (ISL), badminton, Formula 1, Bundesliga and English Premier League.
Advertisers use these major sports events to reach out to a large Indian audience during a new product launch, a rebranding exercise or a large scale brand campaign.
